Anxiety & Depression

Contrary to popular belief, our bodies are designed to cope with stress.

Stress is the way that you feel when pressure is placed on you.

A little bit of pressure can be productive, It motivates you and can help you to perform better at something, say an exam, or an important race. However, too much pressure or prolonged pressure can lead to stress, which is unhealthy for the mind and body.

Everyone reacts differently to stress, and some people may have a higher threshold than others. Too much stress often leads to physical, mental and emotional problems. Modern living provides so many more triggers for unwanted stress, be it work-related, financial or relationship based.

In the UK, anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems, and the majority of cases are caused by stress. Research by mental health charities also suggests that a quarter of the population will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives.

According to NHS research, “Depression is the most common mental disorder in community settings and is a major cause of disability across the world. Among 16- to 65-year-olds in the UK, it is estimated that 17/1000 men and 25/1000 females have major depression.

Depression is merely an ‘opting-out’ reaction that we evolved over time, in order to sit out a difficult situation. By turning inwards and conserving energy, we were able to wait until the unseasonable weather, or threatening animal had moved on. We could then leave our cave and resume our normal hunter-gatherer existence. This depression response was designed to be a temporary state that we used to aid our survival. Unfortunately for many of us today, depression has become a way of life, we have lost the ability to opt back into life again.

This is a cycle that can be broken with the help of Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for bringing about long-lasting change. It is able to help with both the underlying causes of anxiety and depression, and the many symptoms through which they can manifest.

By communicating directly with our sub-conscious mind we can re-learn appropriate responses to non-threatening situations, and then learn how to lower our feelings of anxiety using relaxation techniques and visualisation.
